30th Anniversary Air Hockey Tournament
Denver, CO
Players from across the nation flew,
drove or simply walked to a special event held July 11th at
the Radisson Hotel in Denver, CO. Mark Robbins organized
a rather impressive state-level tournament that focused on the
30-years of tournament play. Prior to tournament play, a video compilation showed
footage as early as the 1970s of some of the all-time best
players of the sport.
Winning the event
was Houston Master Danny Hynes, who fought his way from the
losers bracket to defeat... Houston Master Ehab Shoukry.
Finishing the top three, Billy Stubbs from Illinois.
The top Colorado
player award went to Mark Nizzi, who finished 5th in the
tournament just above Keith Fletcher.
Mark Robbins set
an early precedent to "get loud" and enjoy the casual
atmosphere of the tournament. Near 30-year old Brunswick
Blue-tops were used exclusively for this event with
corresponding red-lexan pucks.
Veteran players
also included Phil Arnold (TX), John Stucky (CO) and Steve
Carpenter (CO) with an appearance from Vince Shappell (TX).
Updated Colorado state
rankings have been posted in the
Rankings section, and a
"casual" photo gallery
has been posted.

2003 World Air Hockey Championships
Las Vegas, NV
Another chapter in Air Hockey history was
completed, as the 2003 World Championships in Las Vegas,
Nevada came to an end last weekend.
64 players, who came from states ranging from
Alaska to New York, participated in the 2-3 day grueling
competition of professional Air Hockey. Now, I realize
that many non-players frequently scoff at this remark with
"...Now how can Air Hockey be a grueling competition?
It's a silly table game, right?" Those who compete
professionally and even those who watch the events in
amazement understand the intense physical and mental endurance
of this amazing "sport".
Yes, we're all aware that Air Hockey is
typically thought of as an arcade/bar game -- and it is.
Professional Air Hockey is absolutely, unconditionally a sport
that many simply need to see to believe. I always
recommend viewing the
videos on
this site, and perhaps we can get a few more "exciting"
matches uploaded in the days ahead.
For the latest ranking information, please
check out our
Rankings
section.
Feedback is always extremely welcome.

KPIX
"Evening Magazine" Segment

Aired Thursday, February 21, 2002 : 7:00pm KPIX Ch. 5
Belmont, CA
KPIX
Channel 5, located in San Francisco, transmits a daily
show entitled
Evening
Magazine which features a variety of entertaining news
topics which are usually focused on Bay Area events and
locale.
One very
interesting segment is entitled
Outdo Malou, where
competitive sorts challenge EM's charming co-host
Malou
Nubla to a variety of 1-on-1 events. Whether it be
shooting half court shots against NBA's Antwan Jameson or
riding up to the South Bay hills for a thrilling goat-milking
competition, Malou is always ready to take on the challenge.
Air Hockey is no
exception.
Air Hockey
Professional Dave Parmley submitted a 1-on-1 challenge to the
show, and about a month later, footage was shot at
Player's
Billiard Club in Belmont, California.
This segment
featured California Professionals
Joe
Cain and myself (humble webmaster,
David
Gray) where Joe became coach and I became the bad guy at
the opposite end of the table.
The challenge was
to play best two out of three games. My handicap?
As a 12-year veteran, I was forced to play left-handed.
The first game
felt awkward to me, with a majority of my shots hitting rails,
but the defense held up reasonably well. Malou executed
a few solid wrist shots, some of which penetrated my defense
with no problem. Her best shot (aired on the show) was
preceded by a series of forehand and backhand windups with the
final release being a forehand-cut that pulled my defense to
the extreme left. Joe's response to her deception was
priceless. But I was fortunate enough to win 7-4.
Game two was a bit
crazy -- Malou's shots were a bit slower then the previous
game and my accuracy began to improve as I became used to
left-handed play. She was down 6-0, but suddenly began
to crank-up the speed and power -- and defense. Three
points were quickly scored against me, each off of my mallet
and into the goal. At 6-3 and becoming worried about
this comeback, I was fortunate to score the final goal from
mid-table with a backhand cross-straight.
Joe and I were extremely
impressed with the care that was taken by Evening Magazine
Associate Producer Elaine Wu in scripting the production
segment -- which included seamless cut transitions and clever
inserts (from a mock-up LCD score system graphic to Pat
Benetar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" background
music).
We had a great
time and wish to thank the Evening Magazine team for
orchestrating the shoot.
